Ryan – Backlog Project Results & 2023 Goals

[The Backlog Project was a January 2023 Otherverse Games and Hobbies community project. As such, you may happen across references to Otherverse and see its logos. The goal of the project was to dig into our respective piles of “shame”, select some yet-to-be started/unfinished projects, and see how much we could knock out in one months time.]

Second Round of January Progress

I did it.  I accomplished a painting challenge.  It took most of the month to do but I painted all eight of my Agents.  It might not seem like much in the bigger picture of painting, but I have a history of never finishing challenges.  Come to think of it, I think this might be the first one I’ve ever finished.

And not only did I finish those models, but I also got a little bonus progress completed.  Bonus progress consisted of fully basing another six Agents and building and priming ten models from a game called Black Powder Red Earth.  My plan is to use the BPRE models as Black Tusk Operators in games of Spectre Ops.  I’m also going to paint them using the slap chop method and am excited to not only complete them, but also learn a new painting technique

Bonus WIP Agents.

The biggest ‘problem’ I ran into and the main reason it took so long to complete my models was my Xbox.  Xbox has been my go to when I just want to turn my brain off for a couple of hours.  And surprisingly Division 2 hasn’t been my game of choice.  I’ve been playing a little bit of Cyberpunk, but mostly my younger son has gotten me hooked on Dying Light 2 and Grounded.  I’m thoroughly enjoying both games and look forward to playing each when I can.  And did I mention I’m running a small D&D campaign as part of weekly family game night?  Yeah, lots of things happening so focus and organization will be the keys to getting everything I want to do completed.

2023 Goals and the Future

For 2023 writ large, I have a couple of goals that I’d like to accomplish.  The first is to finish an Alpha Legion 1K Zone Mortalis along with a balanced 2.5K list.  I always start these large projects, get to the 90% mark, and then just don’t finish them.  I want to challenge myself by closing out some of these half-painted armies, even if they never hit the table.  The other thing I want to do is the most important to me: have fun with the hobby.  Whether that’s painting, reading lore, or sharing a narrative experience rolling dice with cool people over a couple of drinks, it matters little to me.  Time enjoyed is time well spent, and I want to continue enjoying the time I’m spending doing this and build great stories to remember.  Hopefully I can capitalize on the progress made this month and ride that wave for as long as possible.

I can always use a reminder to get off the Xbox and pick up a brush.

Ryan

A New England transplant that originated from parts westward, Ryan is a bit of a nerd that knows a little bit about a lot of things, all while claiming to know nothing about anything.  Seemingly part Khajit a logistician by trade, he’s the kind of guy that can get you virtually anything if there’s coin to be had a problem to solve.  Ryan began to learn the scrounging arts while serving time in parts east as a Loggie and has been perfecting them steadily over several decades.  He has a problem with continually purchasing models, paints, and terrain that he doesn’t really need but his wife doesn’t seem to mind.
