We have plenty of painted Legions for the Horus Heresy but there are many more good guys than misunderstood armies. Tyson has painted some Traitors for me but now it’s time I paint an army for myself.
Raise that Shrapnel Bolter and take aim: it’s time for Iron Within…
Been a while since I held a paintbrush, let alone finish a squad
It has been a long time since I have felt well enough to be sitting down at the hobby table with the hubby to paint anything. It feels great to be able to show off this unit and it’s rhino. I picked this army since it seemed like the color scheme would be easier to get back into painting with… well besides those hazards but that is what Tysons are for. (nice.. – Tyson)
I have been playing heresy for a while with models, while awesome to play and they are painted top notch, were not painted by me in the slightest. So it feels pretty great to be getting to put together my own army. I mean these guys are silver and with that they feel about 90% done.
The goal is for me to play a heresy army I painted. Start easy with Iron Warriors. Silver. Done. Well, maybe a little more.
Tactical Squad
I don’t know much about this army, and I picked them for two main reasons : 1 for ease of painting and 2 I really wanted a more true space marine army. I mean troops and tanks, not demons and weirdos. While Tyson watched his favorite Youtubers I would sit next to him playing some silly game, the biggest take away I got was that Iron Warriors were great to get painted and on the game table fairly quick.
To get the whole project started I went with a 10-man Legion Tactical Squad and their transport, the ubiquitous Rhino. I know tactical Squads are for holding objectives and Tyson says they are really good this edition. Every battle report we have watched has used some, usually on both sides.
We built the unit together the way we usually go about building , I clip the pieces out and he cleans and glues them together. Next we set them up to be primed, first black and then hit with leadbelcher spray I asked Tyson why black first if we are just going to go silver he said that he has found this is the best way to make the silver work better. He’s painted a handful of models so I figure he knows what he is doing. We will probably skip that going forward since I may have blackmailed him into airbrushing them the Iron Warrior color anyway, then leadbelcher from the top for a little brightness.
They are now practically done, besides all the little details that require some attention. I went with Balthasaar Gold for the trim, some Coal Black for their shoulders and gun cases, it is a nice matte black. I used a dark brown paint on a sponge to add battle damage. Then I drenched them in some Agrax wash. To wrap up the models I put down martian something or other on top of the base. Then I placed some dust down on their feet and lower legs. The pigment setter smells. I painted the base rims and proclaimed success.
Then I made Tyson do the hazards. [Insert evil laugh here]
Rhino
The rhino was much the same minus having to build him since I “acquired” it from Tyson’s built and primed pile. I tried to hand paint the base silver color but it just didn’t work so he airbrushed the Iron Warriors paint on and then Leadbelcher top down.
I kept the tracks, smoke stacks, top door and pintle weapons all separate to make painting very easy. As I said with my troops I got help with the hazards. I choose the yellow for my missiles simple because I wanted them to match my army a bit more than the typical red tips. One of the last things I did was dusting the tracks and of course I also had to dust up the runner or step as well since the troop that was going in in out had dust all over their feet.
I Love the fact that I forgot to paint and attach the smokestacks until after Tyson did the first round of photos. Oops, better late than never. Still didn’t notice that I didn’t do the bronze on the window trim and the little shoulder bits. Oh well. They will be there next time you see them. Maybe…
…Iron Without
What’s next? I should probably finish the rest of the Saturnine box set, or Tyson will be insufferable. I also might have found a big ol’ Spartan, and a Sicaran that was primed red mysteriously found itself silver and in my to-do pile. Funny how that happens. Lastly, I straight up stole some beaky Marines and special weapon sets. He has so many unbuilt Marines he probably won’t notice.
