Nightfall Epoch – Gothic Horror Fantasy

Soulsbourne inspired gothic horror fantasy set in post apocalyptic world of dead magitech cities and impossible arcane castles where the sun may show for a few hours or may not make an appearance for days. In the darkness of the Nightfall Epoch, the monsters and madmen rule and the citizenry cower in their hovels praying to whatever might be out there and willing to help. It falls upon you to respond to their cries.

Take Castlevania, add in a little Vampire hunter D. Sprinkle some dark souls liberally and add some metal music for good measure. Welcome, everyone, to the Nightfall Epoch. Stock up on healing potions, cause it’s ganna hurt!

Nightfall Epoch

During the Nightfall Epoch, the survivors of the event known retroactively as the Rending of the Sun cling to life as civilization struggles against the hordes of creatures that rule the night. It has been just over two centuries since the Day of the Last Dawn. Nearly all knowledge of the world before is gone; society has crumbled, giving way to despair. The terrified citizenry hide in their feeble domiciles praying to anything that will listen in the hopes that their children will still be alive when the brief twilight hours arrive.

They cling to an unlikely hope. A feeble sun shines for scant hours in the summer time and mere minutes during the winter months. Food is scarce and starvation the most likely outcome for anyone that does not get eaten by the monsters that stalk the night.

The Twilight Enclave is the one institution that has attained some kind of stability in the chaotic time, where night leads to a daytime no brighter than twilight. Starting as a small band of resistance fighters coming together in Paradigm, the ruins of a city from a decimated and forgotten society. Eventually expanding to become the lynchpin of all of humanity’s attempts at creating society and digging themselves out of the rubble of the past, the Twilight Enclave took up residence in a towering structure known as the Citadel of the Last Dawn. From the Citadel the Sigil commands the Eternal Watch who guard the only city and the various Tribunals that specialize in defeating the monsters that would destroy what little is left of humanity. The Hand of the Sigil, greatest champion of the Tribunal is raised above all others  and along with five champions, fights to save what remains of humanity.

The greatest opposition to the Twilight Enclave is the machinations of the Vampire Lord Legion. An ancient vampire from before the world came to an end, the Archfiend Legion systematically destroyed all other vampires and gained their power, before creating an army of his own. After becoming a vampire to destroy all those that came before him, he eventually became that which he hated most, and more. Now, he holds all the known lands of Praelium under his gore-encrusted boot, while the Lieutenants of his Bloody Thirteen make terror upon the land.

The Broken sky refers to the destruction of the larger of the two suns that supported life before the cataclysm. Little is known of the ages before the destruction of the sun, save for the fact that a group of malicious sorcerers conspired with demonic forces to cut off the source of power for the angelic warriors leaving only the weaker red sun to shine on the land, creating a state of twilight in place of daytime. In the darkness the demons are more powerful and the beasts of the night terrify the land.

Praelium – The world upon which the Nightfall Epoch takes place.

Day of the Last Dawn – the sundering of the sun, the destruction of the gateway from order to Conflict (the world), The Broken sky. Many names that refer to the destruction of the larger of the two suns that supported life before the cataclysm. In the darkness the demons are more powerful and the beasts of the night terrify the land.

Paradigm – The remnants of a once powerful and prosperous city, little is known of the true past and power as the current inhabitants are not but squatters in the crumbling remains of what was once a powerful magitech powered metropolis. Nothing works, save for a few small instances of power remaining in the Citadel.

Twilight Enclave – both the church and the inquisition, tasked with protecting the souls of the huddled masses from the terrors of the night.

Citadel of the last dawn – actual citadel, their vatican, their war council, their headquarters, manned by the bloodline of Eternal Watch, the descendents and followers of the religions before the cataclysm, lead by the Sigil, who uniforms the various tribunals of the Citadel of the Last Dawn. A tribunal of Watchers consists of the head of each chapter/tribunal. The Watch is the elite guard of the Sigil and the Citadel, with the Head of the Watch, the Banner of the Watch is enforcer of the Sigil, tasked with watching for the best interests of the watch, but ends up keeping track of Cronin as a full time gig. The tribunals formed from the original Watch, realizing they needed more to protect the masses.

Hand of twilight – called in for greatest threats, often works alone and can conscript soldiers from other tribunes from the Citadel of the Last Dawn. Within the Hand of Twilight is five ultimate champions the hammer of twilight, dagger of twilight, the shield, the guise, and the book.

Nocturns vigil – Tribunal that specializes in hunting Vampires and werewolves. Commanded by the Caller of the Vigil. These warriors tend to be lightly armed to move fast but well armed for all occasions. This Tribunal has the highest mortality rate.

Until nights ends we will endure

Syndicate of the broken sky– The tribunal that destroys unsanctioned wizards and hedge witches often employs spellcasters of its own. Lead by the Seeker of Truth, the Syndicate often works closely with the Inquisition.

The shards are our reminder of who to hunt , as they are reminded of who to fear

Crusaders of the Open Tomb– When there are shambling hordes of skeletons and zombies, the Crusaders of the Open Tomb venture forth. The Lightbringer leads the Crusade, , the Crypthunters are specialized hunters of the more intelligent ghasts and ghouls, the Tomb Breakers are the heavily armored hammer wielding destroyers that render their adversaries to piles of tomb dust and bone shards.

Return our dead to their eternal rest

Clan of the Black fire-demon hunters, savage marauders, fight with little to no armor but armed to the teeth, practically berserkers, Chieftain of the Fire

Proudly stand where angels fall

Etheros consortium – mad scientists, Scrollbearer “if it is not on this list, it is not allowed” Artificers and book burners, riding the razor’s edge between heresy and creating what is needed to fight the wars of the Last Dawn.

Day of the Last Dawn – the sundering of the sun, the destruction of the gateway from order to Conflict (the world)

Point of Balance – The center of Conflict is the Point of Balance, a forge where a part of Chaos was joined with a Part of Order and fashioned into the semblance of a world, by a race of creatures/giants/gods that support balance throughout the cosmos.

Paradox – the underground suspended city to the south-east where vampires and humans exist in a semblance of a society.

the first debt-  the “first debt” is written in the banner’s tome but what supposedly only Cronin knows is the true first debt, although legion is the one that cursed cronin for a life of immortality it was cronin that cursed the world by not stopping the shattering of the sun. cronin is the only one that knows that he was one of three apprentices to an arcanist that was on the verge of destroying chaos’s ties to conflict before he was killed and orders ties were severed. one of the apprentices was killed in the fight by the second who betrayed everyone. later that same apprentice maddened with power was the one that set the vampire onto the man who became legion. this apprentices whereabouts are currently unknown. he lies somewhere  beyond the current lands.  the details of how cronin escaped are hazy but after the destruction he dedicated his life to slaying all of the horrors he feels he played a hand in letting loose upon conflict.  *name* the deceiver will play a larger role in a later story where he plays legion into thinking he is under legions control but secretly he is pulling Legion’s strings.

The time before – The world that only Cronin and Legion remember was that of a magitech wonder. The monsters were defeated, the wild humanoid races were civilized and technology was powered by a connection to the realm of ether, effectively using the power of souls to fuel their civilizations.

Inside Cronin’s vault is a suit of magitech power armor, magic laser weapons, and artifacts of unspeakable power and destructive capabilities.

Worship – Crusaders and Priests worship several things on Praelium: Solar bodies, godlike beings that reside upon or within Praelium or even the manifested energy of powerful emotions.

Cosmic powers: dead sun, the crimson sun, the dark of night,

Beings: Legion, Daemons, Angels, the Sigil

Emotions such as Hope, Fear, Hatred, Love.

Races of Praelium – the races of the world have different cultures and backgrounds since the sky was ripped asunder.

Dwarves are isolationist, have been fighting demons underground for ages.

Elves are eco-terrorists that blame humanity for the death of the sun and the pain that has invaded their long lives.

Orks are contemplative plains wandering nature worshiping nomads. Despise violence but quite capable when pushed.

Halflings have been reduced to small family based clans of gypsies, soundtels and criminals.

Gnome believe that the sun and stars are safely picked away in gems so that they can be restored once the evil has been vanquished. Gemstones are more valuable than mortal lives, as they hold the immortal for now.Soulsbourne inspired gothic horror fantasy set in post apocalyptic world of dead magitech cities and impossible arcane castles where the sun may show for a few hours or may not make an appearance for days.
